Guitarist wins Whitworth Roach classical music competition

An ANU School of Music PhD student who started learning guitar at the age of six has won the 2016 Whitworth Roach Classical Music Performance Competition.
Callum Henshaw won first place, claiming the $10,000 prize. He also won the People's Choice Award worth $2,500.
Callum played pieces by Napoleon Coste, Agustin Barrios Mangoré, and Andrés Segovia.
Hamish Strathdee came second and was awarded $5,000, while Mia Huang claimed third prize worth $2,500.
Callum said he was happy and proud to have won first prize in the Whitworth Roach competition and to be recognised by some of Australia's leading musicians.
"The prize is astoundingly generous, and so I would like to extend my warmest thanks to Christine Roach for her support," he said.
The Whitworth Roach Classical Music Performance Competition is supported through an annual donation from Christine Roach to the ANU School of Music.
The Australian String Quartet performed during the competition and served as adjudicators.
To be eligible for the annual competition, competitors needed to be enrolled full time at ANU in an undergraduate or postgraduate program.
